ASC-205: Selecting Feeds for Horses

چکیده

Introduction Feeds should be selected with the nutrient requirements of the horse in mind, recognizing that requirements vary with the life stage of the horse (growing, pregnant, lactating, working, idle). Feeds for horses should always be clean and free from toxins. Feeds should also promote gastrointestinal health. The large intestine (cecum and colon) of the digestive tract contains a diverse population of beneficial microbes that can easily be upset by poor feed selection. In nature horses will spend more than 50% of their time grazing; therefore, feed that promotes similar feeding behavior may be desirable. Once appropriate feeds have been selected, it is important that they are fed in the correct amounts using good feeding management strategies. Economy, availability and convenience also affect the selection of feeds for horses. For more information about feeding management, see ASC-143, Equine Feeding Management: The How and When of Feeding Horses.

Nutrient Digestibility in Horses

Many equine nutrient requirements are based on certain assumptions about how well horses digest and absorb nutrients. Unfortunately, a great many questions remain unanswered about nutrient digestibility in horses. How well do horses utilize different sources of nutrients? What nutrients interact with one another to affect digestibility? Over the past five years, Kentucky Equine Research has con...

Adipose-derived stem cells in veterinary medicine: characterization and therapeutic applications.

Mesenchymal stem cells, considered one of the most promising cell types for therapeutic applications due to their capacity to secrete regenerative bioactive molecules, are present in all tissues. Stem cells derived from the adipose tissue have been increasingly used for cell therapy in humans and animals, both as freshly isolated, stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells, or as cultivated adipose-...

The development of perceptual expertise for faces and objects in autism spectrum conditions.

Previous research indicates that individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) do not develop face expertise to the same extent as typical individuals. Yet it remains unclear whether this atypicality is specific to faces or related to more pervasive perceptual or cognitive deficits involved in the actual process of gaining expertise. To address this question, we examined the extent to which...

Feeding to Reduce Oxidative Damage

Although they are necessary for many physiological functions, when produced in excess or without adequate resolution, free radicals may contribute to several equine diseases. For example, an 83% difference in protein carbonyls, a marker of oxidative damage to proteins, was noted in synovial fluid of horses with joint disease compared to non-diseased joints. In another instance, thiobarbituric r...
